Respiratory secretions for IF or virus isolation. Polymerase Chain Reaction can also be used to detect these viruses.
Nasopharyngeal swabs, and Nasopharyngeal aspirates are appropriate samples. Use viral transport media. Specimen collected in the first few days of symptomatic illness are more useful.
