The common aetiologic agents include

  • Rotaviruses

  • Noroviruses

  • Adenoviruses 40/41 (group F, enteric)

  • Astroviruses

 

Immunocompromised patients

In addition to the viruses mentioned above, other opportunistic viruses can cause colitis.

  • Cytomegalovirus (CMV)

  • Human Herpes Virus type 6 (HHV6)

 

Investigation

Viral antigen detection methods-stool for detection of viral aetiologic agents by Enzymatic Immunoassays (EIA)  or latex agglutinations techniques.

Electron Microscope- stool sample should be sent in a sterile bottle.

For patient with colitis- biopsy materials should be sent for HHV 6 and CMV PCR.
