Conjunctivitis

The common aetiological agents are

  • Adenovirus

  • Enterovirus

  • Herpes Simplex Virus

Sign and symptoms

Inflamed eye- red conjunctiva, eye discharge and pain

Adenovirus is known to cause outbreak.

 

Investigation

Specimens-conjunctival swabs

Use appropriate swab and transport media.

 

Tests

IF- rapid

Virus isolation- all three viruses can be isolated.

 Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR)

 


 

Retinitis

 

The aetiological agents are

  • Cytomegalovirus

  • Varicella Zoster

 

Investigation

Specimens- vitreous fluid

The fluid should be collected by a trained Ophthalmologist.

Send the fluid in a clean bottle without any reagents.

 

Test

Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR)
